How Long You Stay Near the Transplant Center
Patients, caregivers, and living donors are often told to stay close for evaluation and the first stretch of recovery. Two to six weeks is a common planning range — your program sets the real number.
Evaluation vs recovery
Workups can mean several days on site, sometimes more than one trip. After surgery, many programs want you nearby for labs and wound checks. Living donors and recipients are not always on the same calendar. Request travel help here with the center, dates, and who is traveling.

If the traveler is a living donor
Eligible living donors can use NLDAC for travel, lost-wage, and dependent-care reimbursement — up to $6,000. Recipients, that is often what makes it possible for a match to actually get to the center.
